‘Moon Knight’ Review: Oscar Isaac Makes It Work as Marvel Gets Weird – CNET

Isaac shows a real talent for funny, both spoken and physical. His British accent helps– it may not be the most accurate London accent ever (Im British, FYI), however the “bruvs” and “bollocks” and one well-placed “wagwan” are good for a laugh. Some viewers may not get it– Isaac referenced British comedies and comedians like The Office and Peter Sellers– and some superhero fans might not like a show that barely has any superhero components. However in playing other hands of the primary character, Isaac brings the show on his shoulders, and makes it look easy. His nemesis is Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow, a chillingly serene bad guy who mirrors Steven Grants disorderly personality( s). Harrow is another Marvel villain you cant helping thinking has a point, sort of, and Hawkes magnetism is a huge part of that. Isaac and Hawke, 2 big-screen heavyweights, are essential to making Moon Knights wackiness stick.

Oscar Isaac faces the dark side of the Moon (Knight).

Marvel sent out the first four episodes of Moon Knight to critics, and it states something that I burned through them all in one go and cant wait to see what takes place next. Is Moon Knight unlike any previous Marvel story? This sequence encapsulates what the series is all about: Its funny, its amazing, and it aims to take you from familiar Marvel area to something unexpected.I saw the crescent, you saw the whole of the Moon (Knight).

The writing, the instructions, the visuals, even the show-stopping modifying all pull together to make Moon Knight such a particular experience. And its all anchored by Isaacs deft efficiency, navigating these different tones with complete assurance.
Isaac shows a real talent for funny, both physical and verbal.

However while its a singular experience, Moon Knight also remembers 2 previous comics adjustments that adjusted Marvel comics however arent technically part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As quirkily special as it is, Moon Knight may advise you of Venom and Legion.Like Venom, Moon Knight involves a Hollywood A-lister being bullied into violence by an irascible voice in his head. Theres less gloopy gore, but its likewise smarter and funnier than Venom, with much better villains. But while the godly voice in Moon Knights head is often entertaining, theres just one Venom.Meanwhile, the fractured characters and surreal tone recall Legion, an FX reveal adjusted from the X-Men comics by Noah Hawley which ran 3 seasons from 2017 to 2019. Legion was a trippy reward, an eye-popping and adventurous riot of mind-fuckery. Moon Knight isnt as confrontationally crazy as Legion– the cinematography is the normal Marvel muddiness compared with Legions kaleidoscopic visuals. But there are strong indicators that as the series progresses it will zoom off into further reaches of insanity. I cant wait.

The unlucky hero of Marvels brand-new Disney Plus series Moon Knight finds not only that a violent vigilante periodically invades his brain, but likewise that theres a grumpy Egyptian lunar divine being stomping around in there too.
