‘Sonic 2’ Movie Review: Sequel Captures Childhood Sense of Adventure – CNET

Knuckles handles our blue hero in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

When I was a kid, in the 90s, Sonic the Hedgehog represented experience. My buddies and I spent summertimes huddled around a Sega Genesis (well, we called it a Mega Drive), trying to zip through whatever the 1991 computer game had to use. When sequels Sonic 2, 3 and Sonic & & Knuckles followed, the fun was shown up to 11 with much tougher difficulties and awesome new characters like Tails and Knuckles. My young mind was blown over and over. The first motion picture adjustment dashed into theaters two years earlier, and with its fast sense of enjoyable captured Segas blue blur a whole new generation of young fans (even those who d never played the video games). Those fans are now primed to satisfy Sonics friends and find more of this rich, creative universe. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is arranged to hit United States theaters April 8, after coming out March 31 in Australia and April 1 in the UK, and itll certainly delight kids of all ages, with director Jeff Fowler recapturing in this sequel that all-important sense of adventure you keep in mind from your childhood. We reunite with Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) as he bristles versus the constraints of being a kid under the care of Earth foster family Tom and Maddie Wachowski (James Marsden and Tika Sumpter). Sonic sneakily commutes from drowsy Green Hills, Montana, to dynamic Seattle for some nighttime superheroing antics. Its an interesting opening, blending the previous motion pictures superfast action and warm, fuzzy message of being content with family and friendship.Jim Carrey dials up the silliness for his second trip as goofy Dr. Robotnik.

Sonics family life will soon be threatened by Jim Carreys Dr. Robotnik, who sports a video game-accurate shaven head and magnificently bushy mustache and has become even more unhinged in his months caught alone on a mushroom planet. He gets home by summoning Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba), perhaps the most cherished member of Sonics supporting cast (since red is badass and he can climb up walls).

Thats partly due to the fact that the writing and efficiencies make each distinct and lovable– Schwartzs Sonic is as fast-talking and pop culture-obsessed as ever, OShaughnesseys Tails is modest and uncertain, and Elba instills Knuckles with a smart mix of intensity and naivete. When theyre thrown up with Carrey at his most cartoonish, its simple to get drawn into their quest for a shiny green MacGuffin.Every series focusing on Sonic and friends is so aesthetically delightful and completely dazzling that its tough not to delight in the CGI phenomenon and pop culture recommendations. As it goes on, the flick leans harder into imagery from the traditional video games (a scene referencing Sonics inability to swim is a standout), which will undoubtedly delight sentimental 90s fans and draw more youthful players into a retro odyssey.Old-school players will dig some of Sonic 2s renowned imagery.

It feels like screenwriters Josh Miller, Patrick Casey and John Whittington didnt understand what to do with the Wachowskis, however, considering that Marsden and Sumpter spend most of the film involved in a subplot including her siblings wedding in Hawaii. These sequences offer Natasha Rothwell the possibility to show her comedic chops as the stressed out bride-to-be, however they outstay their welcome, add little to the main narrative and make the movie feel about 20 minutes too long.Despite this diversion, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the positive sequel the original left me hoping for, with a sharper script and jokes thatll leave you giggling.
